On the track, GANG51E JUNE turns a spotlight on the harsh realities of growing up in the hood and the limited opportunities that were available to he and his peers. The song does not aim to glamorize his upbringing, rather, it acts as a call for change. Through the song and the accompanying visual, available to watch, GANG51E JUNE aims to deter others from falling into the traps he once fell victim to.
Gang51E June "Hood Interrogation"
Known for his popular releases such as “Base’ Body,” “The Hope” and “51 Savior,” GANG51E JUNE has a compelling sound, with themes surrounding his hometown’s woes and black history seeping into many of his releases. In his music, prayer is a recurring concept, referenced by Pitchfork as a foundation that “…sets the tone for his painful and bluesy ballads, where he reflects on a system set up for him to fail.”
The
multifaceted Tulsa, Oklahoma-bred rapper carries the message of hope on his
back. Growing up was never easy for GANG51E JUNE. The oldest of five, he
was nicknamed “The Hope” by his grandmother who believed he had a chance
of making it out of Tulsa. Once GANG51E JUNE began to release music,
he realized that he was not only the hope of his family but the hope of his
city. He strives to teach through positive messaging and breaks stereotypical
boundaries for rappers of his generation. He believes in a sober lifestyle and
is optimistic about paving the way for the generation after him.
