Erin Rye Discusses Her Film

“Lady Parts”

Erin Rye’s movie short for the 2019 HollyShorts Film Festival is titled “Lady Parts.” As the title may suggest, it is about the sexual exploitation of female actresses on the sets of Film, TV and Modeling shoots. The film won "Best Narrative" on Hollyshorts Awards Night. Being an actress herself, Rye had a myriad of personal experiences on the subject to draw from. This is how the concept of her short was formed. She explains, “Actually, it was my partner who brought the idea and said, ‘I think your life is hilarious and crazy and I want to write about it.’ And I was no, you’re not just going to write about my life. I don’t think so. At that point we decided let’s write this thing together.”

Erin Rye
She continues, “We really did start from a place of my frustrations in the industry. Just playing the same kinds of roles over and over and none of them being very exciting or interesting to me and also that experience of being the only woman in the room just over and over and over. We kind of wanted to write the fantasy version of what every woman wishes she would say in that moment and really tell them off. It’s not in the end a fantasy because I like that hint of realism and edge and it’s like what would really happen to that woman in that situation? She’s not really going to come out on top right? They’re just going to say alright, let’s just get another one in. So I really wanted to juxtapose the old Hollywood glamour and kind of the façade of show business and how glamorous it feels at the beginning with kind of the darker reality underneath.”

Being an actress and now a film maker, which way does the future pull Rye? Referring to her film making capacity she explains, “When I did step into that role, I felt a lot more powerful. And I felt like oh, I can actually tell my own stories. I don’t have to wait, sit around and just take what comes my way. I can actually take some of that power back. As far as my future, I have a lot of things in the works right now. I have some writing projects that I’m doing and some directing projects that I’m thinking about. As far as the acting goes, I’m always available for that. You know. if it’s a good script or good money. We all love commercials. But really, I am focusing on my path for a writer, director, a film maker and being able to really share the stories that I think are important.”

For the last quarter century, the New Image Emergency Shelter For The Homeless Inc., has sponsored their Annual Children’s Christmas Store. This event is a staple of anticipation every holiday season for children in need who otherwise would have no toys for Christmas. The location was the Long Beach Hilton Hotel.

New Toys all smiles
The lines were long but orderly and the smiles of delight on the children’s faces said it all. There were tons of toys from everything electronic to stuffed animals, games, books, shoes, coats, and clothing

Of course the jolly fat man (Santa) was in tow to ho, ho, ho, along with a host of celebrities from the film, TV, music, political and business worlds.

This event was started by and is the brainchild of twin sisters Linda Moran and Brenda Wilson who saw the need and answered the call 25 years ago and have been going strong annually since. As Brenda put it, “This is an event that is centered around being able to make toys and to bring this season to children that are homeless and low income that normally would not have a Christmas. We allocate to 40 or 50 social service agencies a certain number of families so they can actually pull from each one of their caseloads to families who would not have a Christmas. This is a private event, so it is only open to them. The referrals come from the case managers so we can be sure that they do have a Christmas.  Sister Linda adds, “They are the neediest of the needy. This is not a toy giveaway. They are per-qualified as she said.”

"Invisable Life" Pre-Oscar Screening - Film

Rych McCain International/Nationally Syndicated Entertainment Columnist

"Invisible Life" was Brazil's official submission for the "Best Foreign Language film" category at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020. The film was screened in the UN-Certain Regard section at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and took the top prize.

"Invisible Life," was adapted from the same name novel written by Martha Batalha. It takes place in 1950's Rio de Janairo among a ridged conservative society where the father rules and his demands are law. Due to taboo incidents that happened within the family, two sisters become separated and live life believing that the other is living out her dreams half a world away.

The film stars Carol Duarte as Euridice and Julia Stockler as Guirda. Both sisters had to weave their way through lies, family secrets, a die-hard rule stickler dad and other obstacles after becoming separated to finally reunite years later. Karim Alnouz was the film's director and delivered a brilliant product to the screen.

The film did have a couple of pretty graphic, in-your-face sex scenes including full frontal male nudity which you never see in the U.S. When asked about it, Alnouz laughs and explained that Americans are more uptight about sex on screen that any country on earth, yet, they have and insatiable appetite for extreme violence and can't seem to get enough.

Getting the party started

The screening was held at the beautiful headquarters of CAA (Creative Artists Agency), in Century City, CA. The after party was a blast with delicious food and drink.
