South African GBV series ‘Four Walls’ makes impressive premiere at The Pan African Film Festival in Hollywood, USA
Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa portrays Grace Molotsi, a married nurse from the township, feels trapped and at her wits end due to an abusive husband who has made her life a living nightmare. When she finally takes the decision to end his life, her house is invaded by two thugs on the run from a cash-in-transit robbery gone wrong who take her hostage. Will the thugs be able to trust Grace when they discover her tied up unconscious husband in the bedroom? How will Grace be able to explain the various revelations that arise once her husband regains consciousness? Four Walls provides insight on the systematic societal issue of Gender Based Violence (GBV) posing the question, just how far do victims have to go to be heard and protected?
Four Walls was sparked by a childhood
incident in creator/director Kgosana Monchusi' s neighborhood where he witnessed a gang on the
run taking cover in a house on his street and the shootout that ensued. this
childhood incident became the key creative source for a story that sees thugs
bust into a house to take cover, but find more dangers in the house they are
hiding in.

The film's director observes that in his country (South Africa), where 40% of women experience abuse by their partners and 60 cash-in-transit robberies are executed in three months, it is difficult to ignore these national pandemics as South Africans. The saying goes “Cinema is a reflection of its society” so when we sat down to write a unique web-series, we felt that this story would be a fascinating lens to bring these societal issues into one space and create conversation.
For the series we wanted to make we had a clear blueprint of production components we wanted; one location, four characters, a high-tension story that creates climatic moments within each episode. The series tells the story of a woman who like most women globally, are trapped in loveless relationships suffering from abuse at the hands of their partners. Unable to get any assistance from the community or law enforcement, our female protagonist decides to take matters into her own hands by trying to murder her husband.
Whilst this is a very serious subject matter, the primary aim of Four Walls is to entertain the viewer and take them on an intense high-pulse journey, and hopefully leave them emotionally shifted to gaze at Gender-Based Violence with a newfound severity.
