Hussle’s
extraordinary legacy was celebrated yesterday with a number of
landmark events marking what would have been the groundbreaking
rapper/activist/entrepreneur’s 37th birthday.
First and foremost, Hussle was honored with a posthumous star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6212 Hollywood Boulevard, in the category
of Recording.
The
dedication ceremony held yesterday morning was attended by a host of
Hussle’s closest friends and family members, among them Lauren
London, his sister Samantha Smith, his dad Dawit Asghedom and his
grandmother Margaret Boutte who accepted on behalf of the family.
Among celebrity friends in attendance were Walk of Fame Star
recipient Big Boy, YG, Roddy Ricch, Russell Westbrook, Isaiah Thomas
and Saweetie. A number of top executives from Atlantic Records were
also present for the event, including President of Black Music at
Atlantic Records Michael Kyser, President of Atlantic Records, West
Coast Kevin Weaver, President of Asylum Records/Executive Vice
President of A&R Atlantic Records Dallas Martin, Atlantic Records
Vice President Of Sales & Streaming Angelique Jones, Senior
Director, Marketing Carla Pagano, and Senior Director, Publicity
Brittany Bell.
The
ceremony further saw Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece
Harris-Dawson declare that Hussle’s August
15th birthday
will henceforth be celebrated as “Nipsey Hussle Day” in the City
of Los Angeles. What’s more, last week also saw Los Angeles Metro
honoring Hussle by dedicating its new Hyde Park K Line Station in his
honor. Located between Hussle’s beloved intersection of Crenshaw
Boulevard and Slauson Avenue and 59th Street,
the Hyde Park Station will serve one of the most densely populated
areas along the Crenshaw Corridor and Los Angeles. The K Line, also
referred to as the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project, is officially
expected to open later this year, bringing new rail service to one of
the city’s oldest communities. Los Angeles City Councilman
Marqueece Harris-Dawson spoke about the late rapper’s commitment to
the Hyde Park Station during a dedication ceremony, noting,
“After
he caught the vision and he understood what the train would mean to
this community and his neighborhood and businesses like his, he got
very involved in making sure that this train worked on behalf of our
people and helped us express and live out our possibilities and our
hopes and our dreams.

“Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom founded his record label, All Money In,
in 2010, making an epochal debut with its very first release, The
Marathon.
Hussle’s fifth mixtape, the follow-up to his introductory
trilogy Bullets
Ain’t Got No Name,
was deemed one of XXL’s
“100 Best Mixtapes of 2010.” In 2011 Hussle released The
Marathon Continues followed
in 2013 by Crenshaw,
the latter of which morphed into a media sensation when 1000
first-edition cassettes priced at $100 each sold out in less than 24
hours at an All Money In pop-up on Los Angeles’ Fairfax Avenue
(with none other than Jay-Z purchasing 100 copies of his own).

A
year later, Hussle embarked on the Crenshaw
Tour before
releasing Mailbox
Money.
This time, the budding entrepreneur offered a limited-edition run of
100 physical copies priced at $1000 each, all of which sold out
instantly. After creating a weekly #MarathonMonday series,
Hussle released the 17-track Slauson
Boy 2 in
2016. The rapper later teamed with hip-hop peer YG for the landmark
single, “FDT (F*** Donald Trump),” praised by the Los
Angeles Times as
“the
most prophetic, wrathful and unifying protest song of 2016.”
Hussle
announced his partnership with Atlantic Records in 2017, releasing
his label debut album, Victory
Lap,
to worldwide popular success, critical applause and a “Best Rap
Album” nomination at the 2019 GRAMMY® Awards in 2019. The
following year saw Hussle was awarded posthumous GRAMMY® Awards for
“Best Rap Performance” for his own “Racks In The Middle (Feat.
Roddy Ricch & Hit-Boy)”)and “Best Rap/Sung Performance” for
DJ Khalid’s “Higher (Feat. Nipsey Hussle, John Legend).”
Nipsey and his lady Lauren London
Hussle’s
creative vision wasn’t limited to his roles as an artist and label
executive. The savvy businessman created The Marathon Clothing (TMC)
brand in 2009, then years later remodeled and opened his first
flagship smart store in 2017 in his beloved Crenshaw District. The
owner of several other successful business ventures including The
Marathon Agency and SC Commercial Ventures, Hussle also launched a
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiative for Crenshaw
neighborhood youth in 2018 called The Neighborhood Nip Foundation
which would serve as an incubator for local students and upcoming
entrepreneurs – the first in a planned chain of STEM academies
within other inner cities, such as Atlanta, Baltimore and Washington,
D.C. Most recently, 2022 saw the long-awaited grand opening of The
Marathon (Collective), a premier THC and CBD retail store at 7011
Canoga Ave. Los Angeles, CA 91303.
