All The Money In The World - Film

On the morning of July 10, 1973 at approximately 3AM, 16yr-old J. Paul Getty III, the grandson of billionaire oil baron J. Paul Getty, was kidnapped in the Plazza Fanese in Rome. A ransom of 17 million was demanded but the elder Getty refused to pay. This situation brought out the true nature of his character in that he was the richest man in the world at that time and yet psychologically he couldn't rap his head around giving up his money especially for a child who was born into it with no purpose.
The
kidnappers grew impatient and cut off one of J III’s ears and sent it to the
newspaper to the town where his grandfather was staying in the UK. The old man
broke down and negotiated the captors down 3.2 million. He only shelled out 2.2
million which was the maximum that could be legally written off tax wise and
loaned the rest to his son J.Paul Jr.at 4% interest. It was a sorry shame that
this man’s money had control over him and not him having control of his money.
Actor Christopher Plummer played the role of
J. Paul Getty. He replaced Kevin Spacey in the film as J. Paul Getty after the latter was accused
of sexual misconduct. Plummer was nominated for the best supporting actor
Oscar
for his efforts and also scored Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for his
performance. Like “Beginners,” the film he starred in and won the Best
Supporting Oscar, “All the Money in the
World” didn’t receive any other nominations, so a win for Plummer would have
made him the only two-time Best Supporting Actor champ as both of his winning
films’ only nomination.
Michelle Williams brilliantly portrayed
J-III’s mom Gail Harris. She
employed all of the tenacity and grit of a mother who was bound and determined
to have her son returned alive and well. Mark
Wahlberg as Fletcher Chace was
Harris’s right-hand man throughout the entire ordeal mapping out strategies to
deal with both the kidnappers and the stubborn old man Getty. Young Charlie Plummer (no relation to
Christopher) played a cool but frightened J. Paul Getty III. This film directed
by award winning veteran Ridley Scott,
was a clear demonstration of how having too much money can not only mess you up
mentally and psychologically, it can cause a very undesirable life that most
people wouldn’t consider one having amidst such opulence.
