Get Lost in the visual experience of Suga Hill!
Almost like a sweet tease, the visual experience doesn’t give much away in terms of plot. However, it is accompanied by narrative poetry that tips us off that Act II may plunge into the outcome of taking risks in loving someone new. It is hard to not hold onto the closing line: “We started at the end but how did we begin.”
The sudden fear of connecting and getting hurt by someone you trusted can prevent us from loving freely. Sometimes, we give in to our inner struggles when we are triggered by our past traumatic experiences in relationships. Suga Hill allows us to explore those emotions, escape into our inhibitions to experience sexual fantasies, reminisce about good times with our friends, and indulge in a thrilling romance with a dose of drama. In this story narrated by Black women, who happen to be besties and co-hustlers, we witness them explore their inner truths and desires while embracing their romances.

Suga Jill Visual
In a time where we are seeing so much #Blacklove displayed online & in books, it’s not nearly enough depictions of Black women navigating love on screen. Suga Hill places the main character, Danielle (Suga), at the center — delving into what it can look like when a Black woman is at the forefront of her own love story. And what it can look like when she takes control of and chooses freedom in her romantic journey. It seems we’ll be left to investigate our notions of what is right and what is wrong when it comes to loving someone new. You’ll discover new understandings of the complexities of life, love, & relationships.
Black representation on screen is extremely important these days, especially those written by black women. In her debuting role, writer & producer, Tamika Newhouse, wants us to see her characters as redeemable in love, complex in nature and challenges us to examine ourselves. I dare you to escape into the visual experience of Suga Hill and I’ll leave you with these quotes:
“I want people to identify their comfort zones — why aren’t you vulnerable, or how can you be vulnerable. “
“With Suga Hill, I hope you guys get an idea of another way to love, another way to communicate.” ~Tamika Newhouse
