Film maker Meryl Hathaway’s HollyShorts entry was “It’s Your Call,” in the “A Touch Of Romance” category. The film was directed by Jacqule Phillips. It’s concept is the emotional roller coaster ride of an on-again, off-again long distance computer relationship where Hathaway was personally involved in real life. As she puts it, “So this couldn’t have been a more personal story. It started coming together in 2011 or so when I went through this type of experience where I had actually never done long distance before. I had always heard what everyone has said about it which was ‘good luck.’ Everyone says it doesn’t work.”

Hathaway continues, “I went into it at the time thinking the best outcome possible and we’ll take it step by step and see what happens. In writing the story, it kind of came from a bigger story which was meant to be a feature which really was how I met my current partner after the story of this film takes place. So once I had broken up with the New York boyfriend and time goes on and then how I met my current partner that was all one huge story that was meant to be a bigger film. And really what happened, it was trying to figure out the crux of that story. What was the most poignant, funny and relatable moment in all of it that could be told in the framework of a short film. It came together sort of naturally when it was like this moment in my life and for anyone to hear and see on screen is not just relatable but its almost inspiring in its own way. A way I haven’t seen before.”

Hathaway explains, “It’s something that ends. Its two people who love each other and made decisions that there might be resentment, bitterness or anger but the fact is when it comes down to it, they have this great report that two people get along who generally love each other. And to be able to end a relationship in a way where it is difficult and you’re not even in the same place, but you fall asleep together, that’s something people should see. For me it come together with difficulty because it was hard to write at times. At the same time it was sort of a celebration of this thing that I find is so unique in my own history that I feel very grateful that man can still be in my life and I can champion him and where he is and he can champion me from a distance because it was a long relationship.”

Hathaway concludes, “So it came from this very personal place and looking at the general consensus of what a long distance relationship is or expected to be and kind of throwing my own twist into it.”
