Host Steve Harvey on the Red Carpet
The 44th Annual, 2013 NAACP Image Awards was broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angels on the NBC-TV network, Friday, February 1, 2013. The two-hour special was hosted by comedian/author/TV and Radio personality Steve Harvey.

     The grand prizes of the night were awarded to singer/actor/civil and human rights activist Harry Belafonte who was presented The Spingarn Medal Award by his close friend, Oscar winning actor Sidney Poitier. 








Multi-Winner Kerry Washington
       NAACP President/CEO Benjamin Jealous and actress Diahann Carroll who was the first African-American female to lead a primetime network TV series with NBC’s “Julia” from 1968-71, presented The President’s Award to actress/activist Kerry Washington who is now the second African-American actress to lead a major primetime network show with ABC-TV’s “Scandal.” This basically was Washington’s night as she also won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for “Django Unchained” (The Weinstein Company) and her mega-hit TV show “Scandal” won Outstanding Drama Series.

    Actor Dennis Haysbert with NAACP Chairwoman Roslyn Brock presented The Chairman’s Award to U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Michelle Howard.



    





Jamie Foxx Entertainer of the Year
Gladys Knight Belts One Out
     Actor/comedian/singer Jamie Foxx was named Entertainer of the Year. The performances of the night included singer Gladys Knight giving a vocal rendition of “The Way We Were” for the in memoriam segment and singer Wyclef Jean and rapper/actor Common performed a version of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O.” 







   Actor Dennis Haysbert was the show’s announcer for the night. Some of the major categories highlights included LL Cool J (“NCIS”: Los Angeles-CBS) for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series; Elle Varner (MBK/RCA) Outstanding New Artist; “Red Tails” (Lucasfilm) Outstanding Motion Picture; Denzel Washington (“Flight” Paramount Pictures) Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture and Viola Davis (“Won’t Back Down” 20th Century Fox Picture) Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.

     The presenters included Archie Panjabi, Cedric The Entertainer, Common, Don Cheadle, Halle Berry, Keke Palmer, Lamorne Morris, Laz Alonso, LL Cool J, Meagan Good, Niecy Nash, Samuel L. Jackson, Terrence Jenkins, Tony Goldwyn, Tyler James Williams, Wanda Sykes, David Oyelowo, Dwight Henry, Eddie Cibrian, Garcelle Beauvais, current Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis and James Remar.

     The multicultural NAACP Image Awards celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film and also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors. The show’s production team includes Executive Producers Reginald Hudlin and Brad Lachman, Supervising Producer Bill Bracken, Producer Byron Phillips, Director Tony McCuin and Melanie Massie as the Talent Executive.
