Leah Daniels-Butler
How did all of this begin? Co-Founder/Sponsor Leah Daniels Butler explains, “Well, my husband and I have a foundation that we started called Help, Give, Care and that’s basically what we do. We want to help, we want to give and we want to care for the people who can’t always do it for themselves. How this particular event started was, we had a son who was actually homeless. And by choice, he does have a support system but for what ever reason, he chose to check out on the real world. We are in the process of hopefully getting him the help that he needs. But until then, I think what it did, it just brought awareness. Sometimes it just ignorance. You’re ill informed or you just don’t know. You might look at a homeless person and think they’re on drugs. You don’t know their situation but for me I automatically assume drugs.”

She continues, “Until it hit home, and it hit our core, then it was like ok no. Some of these people are out here by choice, some are homeless not by choice. Some are a paycheck away from being homeless. It just makes us look at it in a different way. Really see them as human beings, not just people on the streets panhandling. That is what started this particular event three years ago. My husband is real good friends with NBA legend Charles Oakley who heads the Charles Oakley Foundation.” They then joined with the people who work daily in the trenches with the homeless community to help secure the park site, the kitchen and facilities, food, security and over all general coordination of the event.
