The BET nominees were announced this week at a press conference on the rooftop of L.A.'s Icon Ultra Lounge, located down the street from the Nokia Theatre where the BET Awards will be staged for the first time. Singer Tamar Braxton and rapper Kendrick Lamar, both of whom received nominations, started the announcements off by reading names of the nominees along with BET’s Stephen G. Hill, President of Music Programming and Special Events who hosted the press event.

Drake led the pack with 12 nods followed by Lamar and 2 Chainz tied with eight nods. A$AP Rocky has five with Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Miguel tied with four. Drake is nominated three times for the top prize, video of the year. His hit, "Started from the Bottom," will compete with his collaborations with 2 Chainz ("No Lie") and A$AP Rocky ("Problems"). The top award has 10 nominees, including Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie," Kanye West's "Mercy," ''Adorn" by Miguel and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop."

Singer Charlie Wilson, The 2013 BET  Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Honoree
Charlie Wilson came on stage to comment on his receiving this year's Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award. He was followed on stage by Chris Brown who was announced as the first confirmed performer. Brown told those gathered that he "just wants to have fun" that night. "I always strive to give my fans what they want. I always want to bring something new and original."

Brown later reveal during the Q and A portion that he has finished the video for the song "They Don't Know" and that song features vocals from the late Aaliyah "that haven't been heard before." Another confirmed performer for the telecast will be R. Kelly.

This year's BET Awards will be a three day event titled “BET Experience At L.A. Live’ featuring concerts, comedy Shows, a film festival, a fan fest and Seminars from June 28-30 in partnership with AEG Live. The culmination will be the 13th Annual BET Awards broadcast “Live” from The Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 8:PM ET/PT on the BET Networks.

Superstar comic/actors Chris Tucker will bring his own special brand of insanity as BET Awards host. Often repeating and shouting the BET theme "Anything can happen,” throughout the press event, Tucker joked, "I don't know what I'm going to do... I might not even show up. So anything can happen."  Then Tucker quipped, "I’ve got to the check the mail?  That's the first thing at the BET Awards. You got to be paid."  Noting he was joking he added, "All money he gets goes to charity i.e., The Chris Tucker Foundation."
