The Details Clean-Up Man!

     At 6’4 ½ with a commanding bass voice; it is pretty hard not to detect the presence of actor/producer Dennis Haysbert when he is around. The San Mateo, CA. native has been a mainstay in film and TV since he broke into the biz in the late 70’s. Haysbert’s most notable roles were playing baseball player Pedro Cerrano in the “Major League” film trilogy; Portraying the first Black U.S. President David Palmer on the TV series “24” and his role as Sgt. Major Jonas Blane on the drama series “The Unit.” And of course, who haven’t seen Haysbert’s super popular “All State Insurance” ads?

    In his latest film role titled “The Details,” Haysbert plays Lincoln who is best friends with Dr. Jeff Lang played by Tobey Maguire (the original Spiderman in the first three movies). The movie has a twist that weaves an animal pest problem with deceit, infidelity and even murder. Haysbert runs down his character Lincoln by saying, “Lincoln is a very cool guy who’s good friends with Jeff and to Lincoln there are no problems with Jeff who is a saint as far as Lincoln is concerned. But he’s not privy to all of the other friends Jeff has that don’t think as much of him and are going through problems with him.” 

     “The Details” has two elements i.e., animals and children that many say actors can’t upstage. When posed with that question, Haysbert laughs it off responding, “You know what, I find that to be a fallacy because I’ve worked with some really good kids. Actually I have a movie coming up at the end of the month “LUV” where I work with Michael Rainey, Jr., an incredible twelve year-old actor who’s probably thirteen now but he’s a good kid.”     

  

  Haysbert has always had a suave, smooth demeanor and warm personality. Is that something he has worked on and perfected over the years or is that just him? Again he laughs, “That’s just plain me. I had good parents. They reared me right.”

      For this movie, Haysbert was on set with some of the most incredible actors in the business i.e., Ray Liotta, Kerry Washington,Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks among others. What are the topics of conversation during down time that are discussed with an ensemble like that? In his own quiet, humble way; Haysbert just says “We talk a little shop, talk a lot of life. We talk about the craft and what we are doing.”

Delivers A Soul Searching Performance In “Flight”

     She is a rising British actress and is not well known on this side of the pond but in due time this will definitely change. Kelly Reilly stars in the new Paramount Pictures movie “Fight,” opposite Denzel Washington.

   She plays Nicole Maggen, a down-on-her-luck photographer struggling with heroin addition. She O.D.’s  and ends up in the hospital where she meets airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) one night in the stairwell. He is a patient there too as a result of a plane crash where he made a miraculous crash landing that few pilots could do.

Whitaker was lauded by the press as a hero because he saved 96 of the 102 lives on board an otherwise death-doomed plane. Unfortunately, Whitaker is a coke snorting alcoholic and this comes into play with the plane crash. In the meantime, their hospital meeting turns into a romantic relationship at a low point in both of their lives.

     Even though Reilly has an impressive acting resume along with her share of acting honors in the U. K., she may best be know in the U.S. as Mary Morstan and Mary Watson in “Sherlock Holmes” and its sequel “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” opposite Robert Downey, Jr. and June Law. For “Flight” she was prepped for her role as a drug addict by an Atlanta street artist who was real life former heroin addict. He coached her on the techniques and physical sensations inherent to shooting up heroin and familiarized Reilly with drug paraphernalia such as syringes, spoons etc. and was on set to monitor the action during filming.

      Reilly explains, “He helped me understand the life of a heroin addict as much as one can to that extent. And he really, really did open up his story to me. He taught me how to inject heroin without me actually doing it of course. I wanted to honor the truth of that situation.”

   Reilly does bring a total since of reality to this role and on top of it she is paired with an incredible script, an Oscar® winning director (Robert Zemeckis, “Forrest Gump”) and an a Two time Oscar® winning actor (Washington). How did she handle the butterflies for this high stakes situation? Reilly muses, “This is the first film I’ve made in America. I’m knocked out to work with Denzel and Robert; it’s beyond privilege.

 Working with Denzel was like being a boxer in a ring with a heavyweight champion. He’s so intense, brilliant and heartbreaking. In nearly every scene he moved me tremendously with the truth of where he goes with his character. It’s really humbling to watch somebody be that truthful to a character going on quite an ugly kind of journey.”

     While taking an In-debt look at her character Reilly describes Nicole as alone and broken before she meets Whip. She adds, “This story is also about the people you sometimes need at certain times in your life and how they can change you. Whip saves her in a way. He takes her out of the world that she’s in a gives her a place where she can try to heal herself. And then she also becomes very much part of AA, a program that helps people recover once they’re ready to ask for some help. But she wouldn’t have done that on her own” The idea here is that once Nicole survives her O.D., she realizes how beautiful life is and she doesn’t want to be a slave to this drug.

     In terms of her wanting to do this role especially with the caliber of people involved, Reilly says it was a no brainer. She actually was on vacation when she heard about the part. She made a tape of herself and sent it to the film’s casting director. They liked it along with the director and producers and the rest as they say is history.

This Sultry Siren Of Soul Is Back!

     Making it to the top of the game in the music business and then hopping off of that mountain to fall completely off of the radar can be a nebulous position from which to make a comeback after an eighteen year absence. But when you are sultry songbird Karyn White; returning to the forefront of the music world is a very realistic prospect.

   After all, white’s extensive background as a backup singer and songwriter for several hit artists; a Soul Train Award and two Grammy Awards nominee; as well as a solo career that spawned a double platinum self titled debut album (Karyn White) with the mega-smash hit “Superwoman” which became a classic anthem and a gold follow-up album “Ritual Of Love” which included another smash single “Romantic” that hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart has established a lasting fan base which she can surely spring from. While out of the music biz, White firmly established herself as an interior design expert as well as a real estate professional and currently runs successful companies in both areas.

     White has a new album “Carpe Diem” on her own KWE (Karyn White Enterprises) label distributed via Lightyear/EMI, which dropped this week featuring the hit single “Seize The Day.” She hasn’t lost a beat. Her vocal pipes are better than ever while her looks are still eye candy stunning. White’s biggest change without question is her mental maturity and the vast treasure of wisdom she has gained from lessons in all facets of her life experience. To sit down and seriously talk with White is an advance course in the music business, relationships and dealing with the head games that result. This lady tells it like it is and is quick to come clean about her flaws and mistakes. Her new music is a blend of that wisdom and the direction she is now going. White’s new album “Carpe Diem” has a mature edge with the correct mixture of R&B, Funk, hip-hop and smooth jazz. It the kind of music that grows on you, the more you listen to it.

          While she was at the pentacle of her career in 1992, White married super record producer Terry Lewis of the famed Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam production duo. They had a daughter the following year and were living fabulously in Minneapolis, Minnesota. To the outside world she had it all i.e., the mansion, the man, the fame, the platinum and gold. White and Lewis divorced seven years later in 1999. Having gone through the experience of being a power couple in the music biz, what is white’s opinion or advice on being married to someone in the same biz as you? She surprisingly responds, “It’s a blessing. First of all we represent only one percent who are doing it. It is really hard and it takes a lot of hard work and deduction. I think it takes one to know one so I believe for me it was strength. I wasn’t mature enough. Terry Lewis was an incredible husband, father, businessman, producer, writer, everything. I wasn’t mature enough to understand really what I had. It takes an understanding because your husband has to support what you do. A lot of men would probably be insecure saying I don’t want my woman away and not understand but Terry did. Yes, I would advise it”

    What did White learn most about herself during her time off? “God had me. Wow, I felt like I was in the wilderness because at a young age I was very faithful and I knew I had a calling. I knew I was very driven. I was very successful at being able to make my dreams become a reality through God opening doors and being in the right place at the right time and hard work. But my personality and my character and the pains of just growing up as a woman suffered. My mother really put focus on the fact of me being an entertainer but you have to be the whole woman. She was like Martha Stewart. She could cook and do all of that and I wish she would have given that to me but it was like she wanted me to kind of be like what she wasn’t. So the focus was on me being an entertainer since I was a little girl and this is what I wanted to do.”

     White also has a new book of positive affirmations and thoughts also titled "Carpe Diem" which means "Seize The Day." She recently made an appearance on the TV One Network Show "Life After."
